Hey Reader - I was walking through the Hard Rock resort in the Dominican Republic the night before a big HBO event. I was there for a photography project. We were still setting up for the next day, so I took a walk around the property. While walking, I struck up a conversation with a guy nearby. Just two people talking. At some point I mentioned I was from Boston. He turned and said, “Wait… where did you say you're from?” He smiled and introduced himself. “I’m Tommy.” Then he added, “I’m the lead singer for Boston.” And there we were. Two guys from Boston standing in the Dominican Republic the night before a big HBO event. Just talking. People walked by the whole time. No one recognized him. To everyone else he was just another guest at the resort. But we had a great conversation about Boston, music, and being away from home. Over the years my work has put me around a lot of well-known people. Robin Williams. Miley Cyrus. Tom Brady. Gronk. One thing I’ve always believed is this: I never put on a different face around public figures. I treat them the same as anyone else. Sometimes I didn’t even realize who they were at first. And I think that’s part of why I was trusted with those big jobs. Today I saw the news that Tommy DeCarlo passed away. And it brought me right back to that night. A simple conversation on a warm night in the Dominican Republic. A reminder that you never really know who you might meet… or which conversations will stay with you. If you’re a photographer, I’m curious. Share with me a moment your camera brought you somewhere unexpected. Talk to ya tomorrow, ~ Scott P.S.
